Thanks mom. There. I said it. Through grumbling and mumbling about how I HATED to sew, my mom was still so patient and taught me (rather forced me to learn), more so I can fix my own clothes than anything.
I am not a genius at the sewing machine, but my mother was (and still is!) She made me mend my own things and was a slave driver and made me mend my brother's things too. I sewed my own homecoming dress, not that it was elaborate or symmetrical, but I did. I sewed on patches for the boy scouts in my family. My mom taught me how to quilt and such too. I have a machine and can follow a pattern (after pondering a long while) and can sew on my scrapbook pages. I have a blanket that I haven't worked on in FOR-EV-ER!! I am now motivated to try and work on it with a friend here. I am NOT talented at sewing, but I feel my mother taught me, so I would like to do something with that and teach my girls.
So tomorrow I am going to blow the dust off my machine and get to work!
Wish me luck that I can still thread my machine.

Well your skills far surpass mine. My mom is amazing and wish she had taught me. I do have a machine and it's been great for sewing on those uniform patches, and making shorts. This weekend I'm delving into a tutorial I found online for making twirling skirts. Lyena is insistent upon having her dresses/skirts twirl. Wish me luck as I wish you some luck!! I still can't read a pattern though. I would love to take some classes though.
ReplyDeleteIsn't sewing more like a chore? Yeah, I'm trying to get Nona excited about it. This book

is awesome. I've even done some little projects. They're quick and fun. Good luck getting back into it. :)
Dare I throw out a suggestion that you teach your boys to sew as well, so your daughters aren't stuck sewing on their brothers' boy scout patches?
ReplyDeleteI still say that threading the machine is the hardest part :)
ReplyDeleteIf it makes you feel better, I HATE to sew too. I just love fabric, and designing cute things with it and having those cute things. Too bad sewing comes in the middle, otherwise I would just leave it out.
That's not true (just mostly true) I do love to learn the process and I do take pride in figuring things out. But, yes, sewing can be tedious.
Just read through a few posts and CONGRATS on the pregnancy!!! I can't believe (though I can) people ask you those 3 questions. I say - YEAH!!! I hope you have 4 more. (Or whatever you want really.) I hope the pregnancy and sick part goes by quick. And good luck with the sewing. You can do it, because you can do everything.
